All companies are required by law to ensure that they have a sufficient number of employees who possess a first-aid qualification to fulfil their first-aid requirements at all times.
According to the HSE advice (October 2020) ‘There are no hard and fast rules on exact numbers and they will need to take into account all the relevant circumstances of their particular workplace’. It is the employer’s responsibility to decide what the requirements of the business are by assessing any specific work hazards and ensuring that sufficient equipment, facilities, and personnel are available to deal with the consequences of these hazards.
The HSE recommends that businesses should consider factors such as the nature of the work, and the subsequent hazards and risks, the size of the organisation, work patterns, and accident histories.
